Belize finishes last in 2023 Central American Men’s Fastpitch Softball Championship in Nicaragua

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize lost to Costa Rica 19-4 to Costa Rica in the last Round One game of the 2023 Central American Men’s Fastpitch Championship in Estelí, Nicaragua on Saturday failing to qualify to the semifinals.

Prior to that game, Belize had fallen 8-0 to Nicaragua and 8-1 to Honduras before beating El Salvador 11-9 on Friday.

The Costa Rica first win, their first of the tournament after three consecutive losses, created a three-way among Costa Rica, Salvador and Belize for third place at the end of the preliminary round. All ended with a 1-3 record.

According to the Belize Softball Federation (BSF), “based on runs permitted between the 3 teams tied, Belize was edged out from 4th place by permitting the most runs among the 3.”

That left Belize in fifth place in the five-team tournament.

Honduras qualified first tom the semifinals, Nicaragua second, Costa Rica third, and El Salvador fourth.

Honduras subsequently won the 2023 Central American Men’s Fastpitch Championship beating Nicaragua 9-1 in the Final on Sunday, finishing undefeated with a 7-0 record. Costa Rica finished third and El Salvador fourth.

“Belize had an opportunity to clinch 4th place in the classification round but a disappointing 19-4 loss (including a 10 run 4th inning onslaught by Costa Rica) sadly dashed all hopes of qualifying for the championship round,” the BSF said in a statement on social media.

“Belize fielded seven first time National Team players: Shevaughan Flowers (OF), Delbert Hinds (OF). Cecil Price (OF), Roy Briceno (P), Troy Williams (IF), Dale Centeno (IF) and 16 year old rookie pitcher Khajaun Madrill who was the winning pitcher in Belize’s only win vs El Salvador  in this championship.
