By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) personnel participated in a workshop on tilapia laboratory techniques to diagnose fish diseases last Thursday.
According to MAFSE, the workshop was aimed at enhancing the skills of the staff from the Tilapia Hatchery Centre at the Aquaculture Unit at Central Farm and the Aquaculture PCR Laboratory Technician from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) in collecting fish blood and tissue samples.
“The techniques demonstrated in the training are used in the detection process for aquatic diseases in fishes,” MAFSE said in a social media post.
“Demonstrations were done by Fisheries Inspector Mr. Jason Mewette and histology expert Mr. Matthew Green of the Centre for Environmental, Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences of England.”
The workshop is part of the cooperation programme between MAFSE and the United Kingdom’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), who are currently in Belize assisting the Aquaculture Unit under the agreement with the Ocean Country Partnership Programme signed last March.
