Belize Livestock Producers Association conducts workshop for 80 livestock farmers on Voisin Pasture Rotation Management

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A group of 80 livestock farmers from different parts of Belize are undergoing a training of trainers workshop on Voisin pasture rotation management in Belmopan.

The workshop is organized by the Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA), in partnership with the GEF Small Grant Programme and the Ministry of Agriculture.

“Such collaborative endeavors contribute significantly to the advancement of Belize’s agricultural sector,” the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said.

The workshop, led by experienced trainers who share their knowledge and best practices with the participants, seeks to teach farmers how to implement rotational pasture management, a sustainable method that enhances pasture quality and livestock productivity.

The Belize Livestock Producers Association thanked the GEF Small Grant Programme and the Ministry of Agriculture for their support in making this workshop possible.

The Voisin Rational Grazing (VRG) is a regenerative livestock farming system pioneered by French biochemist André Voisin in the 1950s. His concept of rotational grazing systems was further developed in Brazil in the 1970s.

Farms that apply this system are more resilient than conventional farms.

Some of the topics include in the training will be Fundamentals and Practical Application of the Voisin System, electric fences, habits or grazing animals, water and shade for grazing animals, pasture-based food planning, fertility of pasture soils, administration of pastoralist businesses, and technical assistance.

The final day of the workshop on Wednesday will be a Model Farm Field Day in Belmopan

Optional field days will follow in Orange Walk on Thursday (November 30), in Toledo on Friday (December 1), and in Cayo on Saturday (December 2).
