King Charles III at Christmas: “We care for the Earth for the sake of our children’s children”

By Aaron Humes: King Charles III has invoked the Golden Rule of Jesus of Nazareth, “Do to others as you would have them do to you,” in linking personal causes to universal spirituality, the BBC reports.

The King’s second Christmas broadcast, recorded in Buckingham Palace, discussed three major themes – building bridges between faiths, protecting the environment and caring for the most vulnerable.

The message emphasized the importance of “universal” values shared between major religions, at a time of “increasingly tragic conflict around the world;” protecting the planet as being a spiritual duty; and commending the efforts of volunteers helping those in need.

Standing next to a replantable Christmas tree the King mentioned that “Honouring the whole of creation” is a “belief shared by all religions”, adding, To care for this creation is a responsibility owned by people of all faiths and of none. We care for the Earth for the sake of our children’s children.”

And he went on to speak of protecting those in need of help, whether strangers or one’s own family. “This care and compassion we show to others is one of the themes of the Christmas story, especially when Mary and Joseph were offered shelter in their hour of need by strangers, as they waited for Jesus to be born.”

The annual speech was overlaid by pictures of key moments of the year, such as the Coronation and overseas state visits, and ended with a vote of thanks for those who serve one another; those who care for Earth, our common home; and those who seek the good of others, together bringing out the best in ourselves.

The royal family spent Christmas at Sandringham House in Norfolk in a continuation of tradition, attending church services and having their lunchtime meal together including various younger royals and a rare appearance by the Duchess of York, the former Sarah Ferguson – she has not accompanied the family on the walk to the Christmas morning church service for more than 30 years but participated after receiving breast cancer treatment earlier this year.
