Sustainable Harvest International spearheads sustainable agriculture in Belize

Posted: Tuesday, December 26, 2023. 8:15 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Sustainable Harvest International (SHI), an organization dedicated to environmentally sustainable farming practices, is making significant strides in transforming agriculture in Belize. This initiative aligns with Pope Francis’s advocacy for a more equitable and environmentally conscious world, a vision deeply rooted in Catholic social teaching principles.

Established in 1999, SHI focuses on empowering small-scale farmers by promoting sustainable agriculture practices. In Belize, this has involved a series of initiatives aimed at both environmental conservation and community development. The organization’s approach resonates with the broader global call for a sustainable food system that both supports farmers and addresses climate challenges.

In Belize, SHI’s impact has been multifaceted. The organization has been instrumental in planting thousands of trees, regenerating vast areas of agricultural land, and introducing efficient wood-burning stoves. These efforts have not only contributed to environmental sustainability but also improved the livelihoods of local farming communities.

SHI’s achievements extend to capacity-building and economic empowerment. In Belize, the organization has facilitated numerous training programs for farmers, focusing on enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainable farming techniques. Additionally, SHI has been active in providing small business loans and supporting the establishment of kitchen gardens, steps that have significantly boosted local food security and nutrition.

According to sources within Sustainable Harvest International, the organization’s ambitious goal is to impact one million farmer families by 2030, expanding its successful model from Belize to other regions. This target highlights SHI’s commitment to a sustainable future where agriculture is central to both community development and environmental conservation.

Despite being a secular organization, SHI’s work in Belize reflects a commitment to values often associated with faith-based initiatives. This approach is in line with Pope Francis’s advocacy for an ecological strategy that addresses both the needs of the planet and those of impoverished communities.

Sustainable Harvest International’s efforts in Belize serve as a compelling example of the potential for positive change in agricultural practices. Through its work, SHI is not only contributing to the environmental well-being of Belize but also supporting the creation of a more just and sustainable global food system.
