Rugby Football Union Belize joins Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA) announced on Tuesday that it has accepted the Rugby Football Union Belize (RFUB or RFU Belize) as an official member.

“This partnership marks a significant milestone for the growth and development of rugby in Belize, opening up new opportunities for our athletes to compete on the international stage,” BOCGA said in a brief statement on social media.

“Join us in welcoming Rugby Belize to the BOCGA family as we look forward to supporting their journey towards sporting excellence!”

“Following a comprehensive review … the Executive Board has reached a unanimous decision to accept RFUB as an official member of the BOCCA. Furthermore, we formally recognize RFUB as the National Governing Body of Rugby in Belize,” BOCGA said in the letter of acceptance it wrote to RFUB President Daniel Nicolle on January 23, 2024.

As expressed by BOCGA, member associations benefit from assistance from the International Olympic Committee through the national olympic associations, so joining them normally provides benefits, particularly with regard to international olympic participation, to the national associations.

“We were also informed that we are now officially members of the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association. This now means that we are the governing body for rugby in Belize,” RFU Belize said in a statement on social media.

The RFUB also said a number of their members received training as first aiders from Rugby Americas North and 15 of their players and management personnel completed the World Rugby level 1 coaching course.
