Sofa set scammer sent to prison pending $4,000 fine

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Austin Alexander Williams, 26, a Hattieville resident has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being charged with scamming a Belize City woman out of $1,450 for a sofa set she never received.

Williams appeared unrepresented in court on Monday and was read a single charge of theft. He pleaded not guilty and claimed that his Facebook account was hacked. Despite objection from the prosecution, Williams was offered bail in the sum of $4,000 plus one surety of the same or two sureties of $2,000.

The prosecution had informed the court that Williams was also wanted in Dangriga and Cayo for similar offenses. Williams was also in debt to the court for $555 from a previous outstanding fine. He was able to settle his outstanding fine but was transported to the Queen Street police station where he will be handed over to Cayo police pending another investigation in that jurisdiction.

The victim in the Facebook sofa scam reported to police that she had made a deposit of $1,450 for a white leather sofa she saw advertised on Belize Buy and Sell. She was told the sofa was in Placencia and she mad the deposit to an account as she was instructed to do but when the seller became unresponsive after the transfer, she went to the police.
