CFE maintenance on Belize’s interconnection takes country offline for a week

By Aaron Humes: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) says that while there is sufficient in-country capacity from locally based energy sources to keep the national power grid online, it cannot rely on the Mexican connection provided by Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) during daytime hours this week.

In an official statement issued on Tuesday, BEL reported that CFE is taking the interconnection between BEL’s transmission grid and the CFE substation at Xulha offline for maintenance through Friday, February 9, meaning CFE power will not be available between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

BEL says independent power producers in Belize – hydro, biomass, fossil fuel, solar, and BEL’s owned gas turbine – will be working to keep the power on during the week without the Mexican connection.

But just in case, customers are asked to practice some energy conservation and help alleviate excess demand for electricity during this time.
