Commissioner of Police charges own brother over social media posts

By Aaron Humes: Last year Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said he would not interfere with criminal charges brought against his brother Arthur, 53, who at that time was accused of defaming a police officer over social media.

He famously said that his older brother is “my mother’s child” and that he would not disown him.

But now it is the Commissioner himself who has complained of alleged cyber-bullying and harassment over social media by the elder Williams, a Dangriga resident who is driver for Ombudsman Gilbert Swazo.

Arthur Williams in court on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to three criminal charges: two counts of using a computer system to disseminate false statements with the intent to cause another person to be subject to public ridicule or embarrassment; and one count of using a computer system to intimidate a person under the Cybercrime Act of 2020.

The charges stemmed allegedly from several Facebook posts made on January 7, 2024, though it is not clear when and how the Commissioner made the complaint.

We understand that the online feud has been happening for some time now and the Commissioner decided to put a stop to it.

Arthur Williams was offered bail of $10,000 plus one surety of the same amount or two sureties of $5,000 each which he met shortly before 12 noon.

After he made bail, our court reporter asked him if he cared to comment in the matter and he replied, “No Comment…God Bless Belize…” and gave a mock salute.

Williams next appears in court on March 27. While he was unrepresented, Williams says he intends to get an attorney to represent him in court.
