Belmopan Comprehensive School beat Gwen Liz 5-1, win National Secondary Schools Sports Association Girls Football Championship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belmopan Comprehensive School (Compre) Flames defeated Gwen Lizarraga High School (Gwen Liz) 5-1 Saturday and won the National Secondary Schools Sports Association Girls Football Championship at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Saturday.

Khalydia Velaspuez, Our Lady of Guadalupe Roman Catholic High School reinforcement, led Compre scoring four goals in the 1’, 40’, 50’, and 61’. Heidy Lopez scored the other Compre goal in the 85’. The regional champions are each allowed three reinforcements from other high schools within their regions.

Velasquez was named Most Valuable Player after topscoring with 13 goals: four in the 6-1 win over Escuela Secundaria Técnica México, five in the 9-0 victory over Independence High School, and the four against Gwen Liz.

Shakeisha Jones scored the consolation goal for Gwen Liz in the 16’, at the time leveling the match at 1-1. After that, however, it was all Compre.

The Belmopan school finished as champions on three wins with 20 goals scored and two allowed. Apart from Velasquez, Compre also featured Kristel Melchor, Nigelee Myers, Marcelie Mar (reinforcement), Heidy Lopez, Jahxaan Waight (Sacred Heart College). They are all members of the Belize Women’s National Teams.

Gwen Liz finished in last place with one point from a 2-2 draw against Escuela México. In their first game they lost 1-0 to Independence High School.

Escuela Mexico finished the tournament in second place with four points, having lost 6-1 to Belmopan Comprehensive on Thursday, drawn 2-2 with Gwen Lizarraga High School on Friday, and won their last match 2-1 over Independence on Saturday.

Independence finished third with three points. They started out with a 3-2 win over Gwen Liz on Thursday, and then crumbled 9-0 to Belmopan Comprehensive on Friday, before falling 2-1 to Escuela México on Saturday.
