Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) heightens agricultural products contraband surveillance during Easter Season

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) is increasing its surveillance to detect illegally imported agricultural products during the Easter season.

“The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) reminds all importers, suppliers, supermarkets, market vendors and the public that importing agricultural products without the necessary permit is illegal and the possession of illegally imported agricultural products is prohibited,” BAHA said in a press release on Thursday.

BAHA added that anyone caught with illegal products will be fined and/or prosecuted.

During the Easter season contraband activities tend to increase. Aware of that, BAHA and other regulatory agencies normally step up surveillance operations at this time.

“If anyone has information or suspects that illegal importation or possession is occurring, please call any BAHA office countrywide, our headquarters in Belmopan at 822 0818/1378 or the Directors of the Quarantine and Inspection Department at 613-8833 or 673-7583,” BAHA said.

BAHA is already on high alert, particularly with the New World Screwworm being present in Costa Rica and Swine Fever in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Apart from that, the national Agricultural Health Authority is on the lookout to prevent any other animal disease from entering Belize.
