Guatemalans guilty of illegal entry to go back home after jail term

Posted: Tuesday, April 2, 2024. 2:18 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Four Guatemalans caught in Belize illegally after sneaking across the Mopan River will be sent back home after serving six months in prison.

37-year-old Melvin Oseas Izaguirre Lopez, a farmer of Santana, Peten; Esdras Sanuel Garcia Soza, 29, graphic designer of Flores, Peten; Dawqui Neptali Choc Vasquez, a farmer of Sananche, Guatemala, along with 34-year-old, Dionicio Alfredo Ical Caal, a farmer of San Andres, Peten.

In court they immediately pleaded guilty to, on March 27, being a person in Belize entering Belize via the banks of the Mopan River in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Cayo District, which place is not an approved place of entry under the Immigration Act.

The men all apologized and said they were in error, with one describing Belize as “very beautiful.”

Unfortunately, because they were not able to pay the standard $1,000 fine, they were sent to the Central Prison for six months each and served with orders to leave.

The group was found at the Old Novelos Bus Terminal, corner of West Collet Canal and King Street, while Immigration investigators were looking for persons of interest.
