By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) joined Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) in conducting a beekeeping training session for 57 participants last Wednesday, March 27, at the Yo Creek Agriculture Station in Orange Walk.

Their joint training session focused on critical aspects of apiculture, including pollen production, queen bee rearing, and the management of pests and diseases that can impact bee populations.

With 57 participants, including cooperatives, new beekeepers, and students from educational institutions like New Hope High School and Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College, the initiative is fostering a new generation of beekeeping professionals. The inclusion of students is particularly noteworthy as it integrates practical agricultural education, promoting an early interest in this vital field.

MAFSE said a second training session will be held on Friday, April 12.

That session will further reinforce the participants’ skills and knowledge, contributing to the resilience and productivity of the local beekeeping industry. This effort not only supports the livelihoods of many but also ensures the pollination services that are essential for the food systems in Belize.

The collaboration between the MAFSE and RRB is a significant step towards sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation in Belize.
