Belizean cyclist Carlton Robinson wins 1st stage of 2nd Vuelta Maya in Mérida, Mexico

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Fresh after his fourth place finish in the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic, Carlton Robinson of Alliance United, won the first stage of three in the 2nd Vuelta Maya in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico on Friday.

Robinson won the 75-mile stage from Mérida to Telchak beating a massive 46-man peloton, all of them clocking two hours, 46 minutes, and 21 seconds at an average speed of 27 miles per hour. After bonus seconds were minused, Robinson clocked 2:46:06. Second-place rider Raúl Romero of Team SKY follows by five seconds and Belizean Edgar Nissan Arana, also riding for SKY, is off by 10 seconds.

Robinson beat last year’s record by 14 minutes and 23 seconds for the first stage.

According to the organizers Robinson is riding for the Belize Selection which includes Byron Pope, Brandon Cattouse, Wasani Castro, Giovanni Lovell. They all finished in the main peloton of 46 riders . All riders from positions four to 46 have the same time: 2:46:21, 15 seconds behind Robinson.

Pope finished fifth, Cattouse was ninth, Castro was 14th, and Lovell was 20th.

Santino Castillo placed fifth in the Master C Category clocking 2:05:19, the same time as the winner, his Santinos’ teammate, Mexican Juan Chak Medina.

On Saturday at 7:30 am, Robinson, wearing the leader’s yellow jersey, will attempt to win the second stage which will go from Muna to Ticul and back to Muna on the Puuc Route.

The 2nd Maya Tour finishes on Sunday with a 13.65-mile (22 kilometres) individual time trial at the Watopia Cycling Club in Mérida.
