By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today is being recognized as the “International Day for Monuments and Sites.”

The establishment of the International Day for Monuments and Sites was approved by the 22nd UNESCO General Conference in 1983.

This year’s theme is “The Heritage of Commemoration.”

The aim of the International Day for Monuments and Sites is to encourage local communities and individuals throughout the world to consider the importance of cultural heritage to their lives, identities and communities, and to promote awareness of its diversity and vulnerability and the efforts required to protect and conserve it.

The Institute of Archeology reiterates its commitment to preserving Belize’s rich cultural heritage.

“Join us in celebrating by exploring one of our 14 archaeological reserves, where history comes alive amidst breathtaking monuments and sites. Let’s cherish and protect our past for generations to come,” the Institute of Archeology noted.
