Minister of Sustainable Development and Climate Change participate in Key Environmental Meetings in Mexico City

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Minister of Sustainable Development and Climate Change Orlando Habet participated in significant environmental gatherings in Mexico City on April 16 and 17, 2024.

Minister Habet engaged in discussions at the Council of Ministers of the Central American Commission of Environment and Development (CCAD) and the Regional Forum on Conservation of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Minister Habet played a pivotal role in the 71st Extraordinary Meeting of the CCAD, held under the Protempore Presidency of Honduras, where he assisted to steer the direction of regional projects and engaged in dialogues with international funding partners.

Furthermore, on April 16, 2024, Minister Habet participated in a dialogue with environmental ministers from Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean at the IUCN Regional Forum, focusing on conservation perspectives, challenges, and opportunities in Mesoamerica and the Caribbean.

On April 17, 2024, Minister Habet participated in the launch of the Selva Maya II Project with CCAD officials and authorities from Belize, Mexico, and Guatemala.

This groundbreaking project aims to invest EUR 24.71 million, with EUR 20.5 million contributed by the German Development Bank (KfW) over the next five years.

The initiative prioritizes protected areas in Belize and the Petén region, the states of Chiapas, Campeche and Quintana Roo of Mexico demonstrating a commitment to conservation efforts in the region.

“Minister Habet’s participation in these events underscores Belize’s dedication to sustainable development and environmental conservation, showcasing the country’s active involvement in regional environmental initiatives,” the Ministry noted.
