By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) and the Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation (MBECA) are conducting a sargassum cleanup in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.

“In honour of the Belize Barrier Reef 10,000th Birthday Celebration and World’s Ocean Day 2022 Councillor Johnnia Duarte with the portfolio of the Environment and the San Pedro Town Council partnered with the Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation & Hol Chan Marine Reserve for a sargassum clean-up campaign,” said the San Pedro Town Council in a social media post on Friday.

The SPTC thanked all the volunteers “who came out to make a difference”.

“Kudos to all those involved and the volunteers who came out to make a difference,” said MBECA Minister Andre Perez in recognition of the work being done by the San Pedro Town Council, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and his Ministry.

Sargassum is affecting the shoreline in many countries where the communities have been cleaning it up since it affects them negatively, while in some they are finding ways of recycling it and putting it to good use. The tourism industry, in particular, is hit very hard by the proliferation of sargassum on the beaches.
