Gabrielle Gabourel claims 60-mile Women’s Junior Cycling Road Championship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: C-Ray’s Gabrielle Gabourel claimed the 60-mile Women’s Junior National Road Championship organized by the Cycling Federation of Belize on Sunday repeating as Junior Champion.

Last week she also won the National Junior Individual Time Trial Championship.

Gabrielle Gabourel clocked 3 hours, 18 minutes, and 14 seconds (3:18:14).

She was fourth in the Women’s race behind the Elite riders.

LA Sweat’s Kaya Cattouse won the overall race in 3:11:05 which started by the Boom Cut-Off on the Philip Goldson Highway to finish at Mount Hope.

From the start at the Boom Cut-off, the riders headed to Ladyville where they turned into the John Smith Road passing by the Philip Goldson International Airport, coming out on the George Price Highway by Western Paradise at Mile 8, and heading for the finish at Mount Hope in Unitedville in the Cayo District.

2021 winner Alicia Thompson, of Belize Bank Swoosh and 2022 National Individual Time Trial Champion, was second overall 3:11:28.

Third place was taken by Paulita Chavarria of the Chavarria Cycling team in 3:17:50.

Incidentally, this year’s race was three miles longer that last year’s race which was run entirely in the Belize District between Crooked Tree and the John Smith Road and won by Thompson in 3:07:10. Cattouse had the same time last year. Gabourel clocked 3:14:27.

In the Men’s Junior Road Championship, Gabourel’s brother and her C-Ray’s teammate Goran Gabourel took the 60-mile race followed by Delton Rojas and Ramon Codd.

Jaylen Briceño won the Youth Category followed by Travis Grinage in second and Richard Rosado in third.

G-Flow’s Giovanni Lovell conquered the 103-mile Elite National Road Cycling Championship race from Orange Walk to Mount Hope in Cayo in 4 hours, 21 minutes, and 37 seconds (4:21:37) riding in solo.

In the Elite Category, Westrac Alliance’s Wasani Castro was second and Renan Matus of M&M Engineering in third.

The U-23 category was dominated by G-Flow’s Jyven Gonzalez followed by Westrac Alliance’s Eric Trapp in second and 501 Valvoline Cycling Team’s Derrick Chavarria in third. They were 2, 3, 4 in the General Classification.

501 Valvoline’s Brandon Cattouse was first in the Masters category. He was followed by unattached riders Kent ‘Bob’ Gabourel and Robert Liam Stewart.
