International News: Team from U.N. Agency commences inspection at Ukraine Nuclear plant amid safety concerns

Posted: Monday, August 29, 2022. 10:40 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, a team from the U.N. nuclear watchdog commenced an inspection of the Zaporizhzhia atomic power plant citing safety concerns, U.S. News reports.

Ukraine and Russia accused each other of stoking the conflict by shelling the wider region around the plant.

Officials are concerned since it has raised concerns of a nuclear disaster and to avoid such a disaster, the International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi has for months sought access to the Zaporizhzhia plant.

The plant is Europe’s biggest and has been occupied by Russian forces and run by Ukrainian workers since the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The announcement came as Ukraine accused Russia of new rocket and artillery strikes at or near the plant.

Ukraine says that Russia is holding the plant hostage and storing weapons there.
