9 a.m. update – Hurricane Lisa not expected to reach Category 2 before landfall

Posted: Wednesday, November 2, 2022. 9:15 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The nine a.m. update from the National Hurricane Center, Miami, indicates that Hurricane Lisa has slightly strengthened to 80 miles per hour and is now located 55 miles east-south-east of Belize City, moving west at 14 miles per hour.

According to Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon, this suggests that the hurricane will not likely reach Category Two status on the Saffir-Simpson scale (winds of 100 miles per hour and more) before expected landfall on the Belize coast this afternoon.

Gordon told us he would not be able to predict whether the system might “wobble” or shift position before landfall, which might increase disaster risk. At present, the system is projected to make landfall in the Gales Point Lagoon area, about halfway between Belize City and Dangriga, but we must duly remind that the entire coastline is under hurricane warning and conditions will affect the entire country.

That said, Retired Colonel NEMO Coordinator Shelton Defour says Belize may be saved by a daytime landfall rather than at night because it will be easier to coordinate movement and conduct search and rescue operations if needed.
