BDF soldier slapped with six charges for outburst at police station; Attorney raises major issue with the charges

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have filed six criminal charges against a Belize Defense Force (BDF) soldier for an outburst at the Queen Street Police Station he had while allegedly intoxicated.

Twenty-six-year-old Freddy Grijalva, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, answering to two counts of assaulting a police officer, one count of using threatening words, one count of insulting words, one count of using obscene language, and one count of disorderly conduct.

In court, Grijalva’s lawyer, Darrell Bradley, raised an issue that his client had only been told of two charges, not six. Bradley also noted that his client was not served with an official charge sheet as per procedure when someone is criminally charged. He noted that such a misstep on the part of the police is concerning as assaulting an officer is a serious charge.

Nonetheless, Bradley said that the matters would be discussed further at the trial, and Grijalva pleaded not guilty to all charges. Grijalva was granted bail in the sum of $2,000 plus one surety of the same and is due back in court on January 18, 2023.

Allegations against him are that police detained him for being drunk and disorderly at Little John’s Restaurant and Bar in Belize City, and when he got to the station, Grijalva began to curse and threaten his arresting officers.
