By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Netherlands won 2-0 over Senegal but while the score looks comfortable, the Dutch suffered to gain the victory.
The Netherlands and Senegal played a tight game for over 80 minutes until Cody Gakpo converted from a backward header against goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the 84th minute to give the Dutch the 1-0 lead in the second Group A game.
Senegal had a few opportunities but couldn’t get the ball in the net while the Netherlands halfway line had found it difficult to go deep until a couple changes were made late in the game. Those substitutions gave them more flow up front which resulted in the Gakpo goal off an assist by Frenkie de Jong.
Senegal pushed forward, facilitating the Netherlands counter that resulted in a second goal in the 90’+9 when Davy Klaassen scored on a rebound after Mendy palmed the ball out after a shot from Memphis Depay.
Senegal missed their talisman Sadio Mané who suffered a knee injury which sidelined him from the World Cup.
Senegal’s next match will be against hosts Qatar at 7:00 am on Friday, November 25. The Netherlands will play the same day at 10:00 am against Ecuador.
