Gang members back on the streets, police give strong warning

Posted: Friday, October 5, 2018. 3:15 pm CST.

Staff: Over 50 men who were imprisoned during the Government of Belize’s State of Emergency have been released.

Following their 30 days, imprisonment at the Belize Central Prison, police rounded up the professed gang members and brought them back to Belize City last night. Before they could celebrate their freedom, the department gathered the men at the Queen Street Police Station for a mediation session in an attempt to keep them from picking up where they left off with the high incidents of violent crimes in the old capital.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Chester Williams explained that the new anti-gang legislation passed by Cabinet in August gives stiffer penalties and restricts certain freedoms such as the right to bail. Williams also encouraged the men to reconsider living a life of crime.

The state of emergency, called on September 5, was a reaction to a spike in gang-related homicides in Belize City, that saw up to six people losing their lives in a single weekend. It began with the shooting death of known street figure Shakeedi Baizer.
