“Chengo” goes for milestone as NEBL returns

By Aaron Humes: BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Feb. 28, 2019. After a disappointing conclusion to the 2019 FIBA AmeriCup pre-qualifier tournament this past weekend, the seven teams of the National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) return to the hardwood for games starting tonight, Thursday.

All eyes this week will be on center for San Pedro Tigersharks, Kurt “Chengo” Burgess, who stands just five rebounds away from a career and league milestone.

As his 3-2 Tigersharks host the defending sub-champion Dangriga Dream Ballers this Saturday on the island, Burgess needs just five rebounds to become the first player in NEBL history to reach one thousand caroms.

According to the Tigersharks’ Facebook page, Burgess secured a total of 951 rebounds in his first four seasons in the league, and has an average of 11 and total of forty-four in the past four games.

The Sharks swept Orange Walk Running Rebels in their opening two games of the season before dropping a tough one to City rivals the Smart Belize Hurricanes. They rebounded with a win over the Belmopan Bandits before dropping another to the Dream Ballers, which they will try to avenge on Saturday.

Burgess is a two-time NEBL champion with the Hurricanes and signed with the Sharks prior to the start of the 2019 season.Other games on the schedule will see Belize City Defenders vs Verdes of Cayo at the Civic at 8:30; and Orange Walk visiting Belmopan at 9 Friday night, March 1.
