Rejected voters still have an opportunity to register

BBN Staff: The Elections and Boundaries Commission disallowed over 2,500 persons from registering to vote in the upcoming referendum; however, they still have an opportunity to register, according to Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai.

Tamai explained that persons were disallowed for various reasons, including missing documentation or an inability to verify that they are, in fact, Belizeans. She stressed that disallowing them was a matter of protocol because the Commission does not want to disenfranchise any Belizean from voting in the April 10 referendum.

“As long as persons, even though they have been disallowed, they can go back to the Elections and Boundaries registration office with their documentation and their application will be taken,” Tamai said.

Her statement, made earlier this week, mirrors what Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced two weeks ago when he noted that the office of the Attorney General is prepared to accept affidavits by other Belizeans who can vouch that those disallowed for lack of documentation were actually born in Belize.
