Posted: Thursday, July 11, 2019. 4:25 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) along with the Refugees Department of Belize held a training for border management officials and officers from the Police Department on Standard Operating Procedures for identification and referral of people seeking asylum in Belize, on July 11, 2019, in Benque Viejo, Cayo District.

These updated procedures have been jointly developed through a year-long working group process by the Government of Belize and UNHCR in the context of an ongoing regional cooperation framework on international refugee protection and solutions (CRPSF/MIRPS).

The training was attended by more than 30 public officers that operate in Benque Viejo Town, Belmopan City and surrounding areas in the capacity of border management and law enforcement.

The material covered ranged from the global and regional situation, including International Refugee Law and the Refugee Law of Belize.

Participants actively engaged in case studies identifying situations of persons seeking asylum and proposed solutions.

The training was held at the Mount Carmel Parish, conference room in Benque from 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m.
