Tuesday, July 15, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: The recent case of the Smith family remanded to prison on firearm charges has once again raised public outcry about the application of laws relating to use and possession of firearms.

Today we spoke with activist Russell Roberts, the founder of the organization known as FIST- Fighting in the Streets Together.

He lit the spark earlier this year that led to the dramatic events surrounding Corporal Gino Peck’s sudden release in January and has continued his struggle.

He has written to Prime Minister Dean Barrow, Attorney General Wilfred Elrington and Minister of National Security John Saldivar and says he wants them to make clear when the debate on the issue will begin, as the last word was no debate would be held until after the World Cup.

Roberts also discussed the issue of personal responsibility and the political side of the issue in light of Mark King’s controversial comments a few weeks ago.

He noted that it seemed that people like the Smiths are not political party supporters, or more specifically supporters of the ruling UDP, as the area representative has said nothing about the issue publicly.

He noted that while citizens have primary responsibility for safeguarding the use and security of their weapons, the laws as written do not support flexible treatment of citizens in unfortunate circumstances, which are not of their own making.

Roberts says he has the support of Citizens Organized for Liberty through Action (COLA) and the large umbrella group known as the Rod of Correction.
