Fin Sec indicates that Government may not appeal the Chief Justice decision re the 1.4 billion dollar spending

By Aaron Humes: Second defendant in the case of Briceño vs Barrow Financial Secretary Joseph Waight appears inclined to counsel his boss, the Minister of Finance, to amend the Constitution to correct the errors found by Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin in this morning’s ruling.

Pending a review of all the implications of the judgment, he said, “that is what the court has determined; I’m sure that the Minister of Finance and Ministry of Finance will comply with the decision of the court.”

But he took issue with the description of the Government’s handling of the national finances and the comparison to a panades shop: “I purchase panades; we don’t make panades in the Ministry of Finance. And look, at no point has there been any suggestion or hint of misappropriation or misuse of the money…”

Waight says that of necessity they will have to reach out to the Opposition to pass the Constitutional amendment and that he is not worried about potential penalties under the Finance and Audit Reform Act.
