Costa Rica leads the way for same-sex marriage in Central America

Posted: Tuesday, May 26, 2020. 10:47 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Central American nation of Costa Rica today becomes the first country in Central America to legalize same-sex marriage.

As the country legally recognizes same-sex marriage today, the President, Carlos Quesada wrote on twitter: “Today, Costa Rica officially recognizes same-sex marriage.”

Quesada says that the country is celebrating liberty, equality and democratic institutions.

In August 2018, the country’s court ruled that laws preventing same-sex marriage were unconstitutional and the court provided 18 months for the legislature to enact marriage equality.

After the country’s decision, couples celebrated the historic day by hosting weddings overnight.

Advocacy organizations also cheered the decision saying that the country made history bringing marriage equality to Central America.
