Pregnant woman and child dead, more than a dozen injured in Coastal Road accident

By Aaron Humes: Around 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, the occupants of a van returning from Dangriga to Belize City via the Coastal Road met death when their vehicle turned over after the driver lost control.

The vehicle came to rest wheels up, with occupants heard screaming for help. Two eventually died, identified as a 12-year-old minor and Janet McNab, 18, who was pregnant.

One worker told reporters that he was working nearby and assisted several victims to get to the hospital. He said he observed a girl, 12 or 13 years old, with “her head mashed up,” and others with varying degrees of injuries.

A majority of the injured are in treatment in hospitals in Belmopan and Dangriga. Police investigations continue.
