ComPol appeals to drivers to be cautious during Easter vacation

By Benjamin Flowers: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams is appealing to motorists to be extra vigilant on the highways during the Easter weekend, following an increase of road traffic accidents in recent weeks.

Williams stressed today that over the past two to three weeks, the number of accidents has gone up and several people have died.

He noted that there are many drivers who are on the roads not exercising due care and attention, meaning that all drivers need to be prepared at all times, should they encounter such.

“So don’t just drive for yourself but also for those who may be driving with some level of incompetence,” Williams said.

He added that, despite the reduction in manpower on the highways due to COVID-19 regulation enforcement, highway security is of paramount importance for the police department, as such police will maintain a presence through the highway patrols and random mobile checkpoints. Despite those efforts, he said that drivers ultimately need to rely on their diligence for their own safety and the safety of their families.

“I always say to my driver, because sometimes drivers tend to think that having the right of way saves your life, I would say to him having the right of way doesn’t mean that if you crash you are going to live,” Williams said. “So even though you know you have the right of way still exercise extreme caution because when you crash and dead all they will say is oh he died having the right of way.”
