Baby formula shortage in the United States unlikely to affect Belize

By Benjamin Flowers: The United States is currently grappling with a shortage of baby formula after Abbot Nutrition, the largest producer of formula, issued a recall on several occasions of its products but despite the vast number of items Belize imports from the US, the country seems relatively unaffected by the shortage.

CNBC reports that Abbot issued a recall in February for Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare powdered formulas after four infants in Michigan became ill with bacterial infections, after consuming Abbot formulas. Two of them later died.

The report notes that the US consumes 98 percent of the baby formula it produces, but that 43 percent of formula supplies were out of stock across the US in the first week of May. Abbot said that its manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Michigan, the source of the recall, would re-open in two weeks pending approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but it would take around eight weeks to return supplies back to normal.

The US Government issued a statement last week saying that there would be increases in imports of baby formula from countries such as Chile, Ireland, Mexico, and the Netherlands to meet local demand.

Belize also has the option to supplement any shortfall in US-based baby formula imports with formula from Mexico, which will be vital in the country’s ability to respond to those shortages.
