Thursday, August 21, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Alleged gang boss Jason “Soup” Williams is a free man after charges of aggravated assault and discharging a firearm in public were dismissed at the end of a trial before Chief Magistrate Ann-Marie Smith.

At the close of the prosecution’s case and before Williams’ attorney Michael Peyrefitte could submit to have the charges dropped, the Chief Magistrate ended the case, saying that there was insufficient evidence presented to substantiate the charges.

On February 17, 2014, police constables Jason Augustine and Elvin Nah said they heard the sound of gunfire while patrolling on Orange Street and went to investigate.

Upon reaching the area of Bishop Street at its junction with West Canal, they saw a dreadlocked man, who they identified as Williams, who opened fire on them and then turned to flee.

The shots missed both officers.

In cross-examination, Constable Augustine could not say for sure who had shot at him, only noting that the person he saw “looked like” Williams.

Nah did not personally see anything and was not called to testify.

Williams, said to lead the Supal Street gang, was suspected but never charged in the shooting of Kariq Tzul and Andrew Tate on West Canal near King Street the following night, February 18.

He remains out on bail of $1,000, two hundred in cash, for a separate case in which he is accused of resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

These charges were levelled against him last Monday, August 11.
