Prosecution has no case on Padillo the “meter man”

Posted: Thursday, December 14, 2017. 3:21 pm CST.

BBN Staff:  A man walked free from a case of theft amounting to over $100,000 this week after the prosecution failed to provide what evidence they have in the case.

On Wednesday Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford told Burrell Boom Resident Santiago Padillo, who stands accused of stealing over 3,000 light meters from Belize Electricity Limited, valued around $170,000 dollars, when prosecutors could not provide the court with disclosure.

The senior magistrate refused to grant the prosecution another adjournment, after considering that Padillo was arraigned and remanded for the charge back in April.

Notably, since the Senior Magistrate only dismissed the case, instead of acquitting Padillo, he can be brought back to court and tried at a later date if the prosecution provides enough evidence.
