By BBN Staff: The Belize City Council yesterday held a basketball marathon at the Bird’s Isle basketball court.
The event, organized by Councilor Micah Goodin, saw the turnout of teams from every constituency in the old capital.
Goodin told BBN that yesterday’s event was just an exhibition marathon to showcase teams that will play in the council’s summer basketball tournament.
The tournament will start July 9 and end on August 12.
Games will be played Monday to Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
The categories are U15 and U12. Goodin says the tournament is expected to engage about 240 children for the summer.
He thanked Mayor Wagner who he says is fully engaged in the development of youth and sports.
“He is concerned about the future of the next generation rather than the next election,” said Goodin.
While teams are provided with free jerseys and will be transported home after games, the council is to award winning teams with not only medals and trophies but a book grant of almost $200 per child.
Goodin says this is apart of Mayor Wagner’s commitment to education.
