By BBN Staff: Belize’s Music Ambassador, Shyne Barrow, met with representatives of the Cuban Institute for Music and the Cuban Agency for Rap while on a personal visit to Cuba.
In discussions with Directors Eileen Tegent Melendez and Ruben Marin Manning, Barrow found that the Cuban government, through the parent Institute for Music, supports and provides space for the Agency for Rap.
The Agency’s work includes symposiums for networking and exchanges with other artists from the region, building awareness about Cuban rap abroad, competitions, as well as social programmes and community outreach activities.
Barrow’s objectives include creating a link and to learn more about how the Cuban government encourages and develops artists of all genres.
During his visit, Barrow established a link for Belize with both the Institute for Music and the Agency for Rap to foster future collaboration with Belizean artists.
He also offered advice to the Agency’s Director about the importance of creating an identifiable Cuban style using traditional, recognizable beats as a base to leverage their rap internationally.
Barrow also met DJs Reymel and Salazar who are working to raise the status of their skills in Cuba.
