PM files official complaint against Supreme Court Justice

Posted: Friday, February 22, 2019. 11:38 am CST.

BBN Staff: Prime Minister Dean Barrow said this week that he has made a formal complaint about Justice Courtenay Able to Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin over the way Able treats Crown Counsels in court.

Barrow said that his contention with Able has nothing to do with the judgment made against the Government of Belize, which allowed the

Belize Bank to withhold over $14 million in taxes but rather his “dismissive” treatment of government attorneys.

“It cannot be right for a judge to treat, not just representatives of the crown or the government, any representatives of litigants before him in the fashion that our people complain of,” Barrow said.

He noted that the government will give its best efforts to appeal the Belize Bank matter, which is rooted in the $90 million owed over the Universal Health Services debt guarantee and subsequent litigation. While he stressed he has no problem with the judgments, he did note that he checked Able’s record of judgments to find that over 90 percent of any government cases before him ended up with a decision against the Government of Belize.
