Mexico defeats the US to win the Gold Cup; Brazil takes Copa America

By BBN Staff: Both the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2019 Copa America tournament came to an end today with Mexico winning the Gold Cup and Brazil taking Copa America. Numerous Belizean football fans ride with Mexico and Brazil, and as such these two (2) victories are welcomed by these Belizean fans.

In tonight’s Gold Cup final, the Mexicans dominated the second half to defeat their US arch rivals 1 goal to nil. The US team, however, dominated the first half but wasted their chances to convert. Christian Pulisic, winner of the youngest player award, had a great chance in the 7th minute but he was blocked by Guillermo Ochoa, the Mexican goalkeeper. Shortly after Jozy Altidore wasted another golden opportunity for the US when he missed a one on one break with Ochoa.

The game was evenly matched for the rest of the first half, but after the half time break, Mexico came out more confident and dominated the second half. Superb midfield play by the Mexicans gave them a number of opportunities for goals, but it was not until the 73rd minute that Jonathon Dos Santos lifted the ball pass the US goalkeeper to give Mexico the 1 nil victory.

With today’s victory, Mexico has won the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the 8th time.

Earlier this today, Brazil defeated Peru 3-1 to take the Copa America championship. This is the first Copa America win in 12 years for Brazil, a team that has been struggling in recent international competition. Brazil now has 9 Copa America titles, but still trails Uruguay with 15 titles and Argentina with 14.
