United Democratic Party claims majority through 2 weeks of village council elections

Posted: Monday, July 8, 2019. 2:20 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The ruling United Democratic Party claims as many as 302 seats, including 40 chairs, through 2 weeks of village council elections, compared to 220 for the People’s United Party and 38 independents.

Already, in this third week, Chairman Alberto August and Belize Rural North area representative Edmond Castro have claimed the villages of Gardenia and Biscayne on the Philip Goldson Highway, elected apparently unopposed on Sunday.

According to a party press release, August is quoted as claiming as many as 136 of 175 seats up for grabs last week, including all eight villages voting in Corozal District and a majority in Toledo.

The party boasts of its success as attributable to a “big tent” philosophy and recruiting the most competent, qualified and willing candidates, and thanks all involved for joining with the UDP and giving the lie to the claim that the party has ignored rural Belize development.

We are awaiting official results for this third week of elections which continue through early August.

Meanwhile, asked last week if the UDP should still be winning village council elections 11 years into office, the Opposition Leader John Briceño observed, “Even the devil has its followers and the UDP still has its followers. Nobody will deny the fact that they have followers.” He went on to state that even in an alleged PUP stronghold like the Corozal District, there are villages that have always voted UDP and continue to do so. What is important to the PUP, he said, is their gains and momentum, which he judges to be in the “right direction” as general elections approach.
