Accused ATM thieves freed after a year

By Aaron Humes: 21-year-old Joscan Jafet Uriostequi, a driver in Cancun along with 26-year-old Travel Agent representative, Belen Isai Uriostequi and her common-law husband, Leonel Isaac Peralta Rodriguez had charges of theft from various automated teller machines (ATM’s) withdrawn in court on Friday.

The prosecutor offered no explanation to Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer and attorney Leslie Hamilton had no comment.

The trio was arraigned last January for thefts of $300 from the Corozal branch on January 19, 2018; $500 from the Orange Walk branch on January 19; and $300 from the Corozal branch also on January 19. Police had initially said that according to the Bank, a loss of $95,752.54 was reported.

Subsequently, in June, charges were laid for reported thefts from Atlantic Bank ATMs in Ladyville and downtown Belize City on Albert Street, but it is not clear what happened to these charges.
