“Public becoming too relaxed with preventative measures,” says Ministry of Health

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health (MOH) is concerned that members of the public is not taking the COVID-19 threat to Belize as seriously as they should and are engaging in increasingly risky behaviors.

Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero, speaking at today’s session of Ask the Experts, said that the Ministry has been noticing people disregarding protocols established to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which could have a negative effect on the national response.

“We’re seeing a vast amount of people on the street. We’re supposed to only be having essential services functional this week, but we are not so sure that that is in point of fact what is happening. We are seeing people around the parks, people are on the street, along the highways, lost of cars on the highways now; and so that is getting us very nervous and we feel that is a major cause of concern…” Manzanero said.

He stressed that, while Belize has been doing well in terms of not reporting any new cases and positive patients recovering, the fact is that a second wave of COVID-19 positive cases is still very possible, so the country cannot let its guard down.
