Let the countdown begin: Teachers headed back to schools tomorrow

Posted: Sunday, August 2, 2020. 1:04 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: In preparation for the reopening of schools on August 10, teachers countrywide are headed back to their respective schools tomorrow, August 3.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow, at a recent press conference, said that he is satisfied that reopening the school is the right decision, despite the fact the number of cases currently stands higher than when schools closed back in March. Barrow stressed that the current level of
confirmed and active cases in Belize have circumstances attached to them including border jumpers and repatriated Belizeans, but there is no confirmed community spread of COVID-19 in-country.

He noted that schools in the communities where border jumping is prevalent may be subject to delays in reopening.

“In terms of making the schools ready the Ministry of Education has received a great deal of assistance,” Barrow said. “One of the things still outstanding is the installation of wash basins. I have promised the Ministry that the FS (Financial Secretary) will try to work some of his usual magic with his bag of tricks, which is getting rather empty, but still we’ll have to find money…” The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) is not as convinced as Barrow that reopening on August 10 is the right decision and has called on its membership to assist by informing the union on the state of preparedness of each school as they return tomorrow. The BNTU notes that it is concerned about the well being of all teachers and students with regard to the reopening, and also concerned about the impact the August 15 reopening of the Philip goldson International Airport will have on the country.

The union has pledged to engage in discussions with top-level officials from the Ministry of Education and said that it is looking to its membership for the much-needed information that will guide those discussions.

This is a developing story.
