Orange Walk market closed temporarily due to COVID-19 case

Posted: Sunday, August 2, 2020. 8:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Orange Walk Town Council announced this evening that as of Monday, August 3rd, the town market at the Fort Cairns Plaza will be closed for sanitization.

A statement released by the council reveals, “…one of the Covid-19 patient had and has been conducting business at the Fort Cairns Market Plaza. The family has a stall and they all have been placed in home quarantine.”

The Council says the closure is temporary and the decision was taken to avoid the spread of the virus.

Mayor Kevin Bernard’s administration also plans “more stricter rules as it relates to persons vending at the Market Area. Any vendor found in contravention of these rules will be evicted permanently from the market area.”

The Orange Walk District continues to lead the country in terms of number of cases of the disease, primarily from those jumping the Mexican border to interact with family or engage in contraband and other illegal activities.
