Opposition Leader: Delay school re-opening “until children are safe”

Posted: Wednesday, August 12, 2020. 2:11 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition People’s United Party (PUP), John Briceño, says the Ministry of Education should not be so quick to reopen schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He told the audience at the Princess Hotel and virtually that the Ministry of Education must assure itself that the teachers have the tools they need to protect themselves and their students, and satisfy worried parents.

Briceno said Belize is now “living in a time of change and living in a time of uncertainty.” As Belize confronts economic and social challenges, some existent before the pandemic and others exacerbated by it, Briceno said we will get through it together and determined to change ourselves and change the country.

The next target date for reopening is the first Monday in September.

Details of the PUP plan can be found at the website planbelize.com.

We’ll also have more coming up later.
