By BBN Staff: The United Demcratic Party (UDP) Members of the Dangriga Constituency Action Group released a statement today, issuing a strong word of caution to other members of the UDP outside of the constituency that are getting involved with the selection process of the Standard Bearer for Dangriga.
The group said that it is pleased to announce that Francis Marin, who has the approval of the constituency, has been approved as a convention candidate, but notes with concern that there are rumors circulating to the effect that Dangriga will be having an endorsement convention.
“It appears that there are strong influential persons within and outside the constituency who has taken it upon themselves that it is their God Given Right to determine the UDP Leader of the Dangriga Constituency. The UDP Members Dangriga Constituency Action Group hereby categorically condemn this authoritarian move and reiterate their call for the Party Authorities to provide the UDP Voters of the Dangriga Constituency an opportunity to democratically select their Representative,” the group said.
The Action Group went on to say that proceeding with an endorsement convention of the current Standard Bearer Frank “Papa” Mena, would be akin to the current oppression being experienced by Garinagu communities in Honduras.
The group described the current contention with selecting a standard bearer as an “easily resolved political disagreement” and said that it hopes the situation does not result in constituents having to express their anger at the ballot boxes in the upcoming General Election. The group also said it “strongly recommends that persons outside of the Dangriga Constituency , refrain from meddling in the affairs of the Constituency.”
Back in July the group wrote to Party Leader Elect of the UDP Patrick Faber, expressing no confidence in Mena which prompted discussions at the party level. John Saldivar, who lost the race for party leader has publicly endorsed Mena, but the Action Group seems steadfast in its conviction. The group said that it will be hosting a virtual media meeting in the near future to re-emphasize its position, but did not give a definitive date.
