“Government will consider expert advice with respect to lockdowns,” says Tourism Minister

Posted: Wednesday, December 16, 2020. 1:58 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations Anthony Malher, says that the Government of Belize (GOB) has not entirely ruled out the possibility of a lockdown as a means of addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, but stressed that such a decision must be taken responsibly.

Malher noted that Belize continues to suffer from the economic impact of the pandemic with many businesses struggling to stay open and others on the brink of closing.

“It is a critical time, we have to look at the situation as a whole. We have to look at health issues and economic issues. So we have to be a responsible government. But if the health professionals, with data, tell us that there needs to be a lockdown then we will consider it as a government,” Malher said.

He also noted that, as the number of infections and deaths due to COVID-19 continues to rise in Belize, personal responsibility becomes even more important.

“As a people, we have to be responsible, we have to social distance, we have to wear our mask, we have to abide by the rules and regulations. It is critical as a people to do our part to curb the spread of COVID,” Malher added.

He noted that GOB is planning a press conference for Friday, December 18, to brief the nation on measures that will be taken to address the pandemic and other national issues going forward.
