New regulations restrict travel, set out fines

By Aaron Humes: New quarantine regulations to go into effect on Sunday will include limits on inter-district travel from the Corozal and Orange Walk Districts and a reduction of capacity on public transportation by half.

Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat says this is necessary to reduce spread especially in these two districts, which have seen the brunt of infections and deaths.

The Minister also highlighted the new Christmas campaign discouraging movement for the holidays as well as refined treatment for the disease, introducing the use of ivermectin and covalescent plasma, outlined the membership of the new COVID-19 response team led by Acting Director of Health Services, Dr Melissa Diaz-Musa. Predecessor Dr Marvin Manzanero is headed home to continue convalescing from his bout with the disease this weekend.

On the effort to get vaccines, Minister Chebat reiterated partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to, among other things, identify the population to be vaccinated and managing logistics. Some 238,000 vaccines will be obtained through the COVAX (GAVI alliance) for the most vulnerable of the population.

Both employers and employees will now be fined for violations of the regulations, to be outlined by Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa.
