New House Speaker Valerie Woods thanks her supporters

By BBN Staff: Today, newly-appointed Speaker of the House of Representatives Valerie Woods, thanked her supporters for their endorsement of her appointment.

Woods, who noted that she is the fourth woman to assume the post of House Speaker out of the 12 total people to hold the position, said that she appreciated the recognition of having more women in leadership roles.

“Every journey begins with its first few steps and I thank all members of the House for their support,” Woods said.

She also stressed that the Speaker of the House has the difficult job of being the “referee” in House debates and is called upon for, balanced and impartial overseeing of the discourse in parliament. She vowed to maintain the highest level of professionalism while carrying out her role.

“There are standing orders and rules which guide this chair. I embrace the challenge and look forward to contributing to the further development of this parliamentary institution and doing my part in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of many Belizeans,” Woods added.

She closed by wishing all Belizeans a Merry Christmas and called on the public to adhere to the protocols set in place for the prevention of COVID-19.
