By BBN Staff: Gang rivalries have been flaring up in Belize City over the past few weeks, with numerous murders committed on the south side prompting Commissioner of Police Chester Williams to issue a stern warning to gang members about the approaching Christmas holiday.
Williams, speaking on the ongoing efforts to keep Belizeans safe during the Christmas season, said that police are targeting three main areas; the area of the Lake Independence community in the vicinity of St. Martin de Porres parish, the area on Mahogany Street Extension known as “Gungulung” and the George Street area.
He emphasized that, while officers have been instructed not to brutalize gang members, they will use the force deemed necessary if the gang members are adamant about causing trouble.
“While yes the directive is for them to do their job it does not mean that we going to be brutal but if and when the time comes for them to be brutal, someone wants to behave in such a way being out there perpetuating violence you don’t expect the police is going to come with powder and lotion to powder and lotion you. You are going to feel the wrath of the police,” Williams said.
He also noted that the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) has been moved from the St. Martin’s area and re-deployed to George Street, while the special Paitrtol Unit (SPU), which is a larger unit, takes over in St. Martins.
