By BBN Staff: Every month, the U.S. Embassy in Belize highlights the work of outstanding Belizeans.
For March, the embassy is putting their alumni spotlight on Leni Ysaguirre McGann.
McGann has a BA in International Financial Markets and began her career working at a bank.
She later earned a LL.B. Degree and Legal Education Certificate and is the current deputy director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) in Belize during which she participated in the International Visitors Leadership program (IVLP).
Leni participated in the 2021 Sub-Regional Caribbean IVLP program on digital assets which was operated across virtual platforms, taking into consideration travel restrictions due to COVID allowing for the involvement of all participants.
During the program, Leni was able to network with other individuals focused on the regulation of digital assets within their own countries. She was also able to take part in other valuable conversations and informational sessions with various agencies and gain insight into the different strategies, regulations and enforcement tactics employed by other countries and groups.
Leni joined the FIU in 2013 as a legal officer and was promoted to deputy director in 2017.
The FIU addresses money laundering and terrorist financing by analyzing suspicious transaction reports, investigating and prosecuting financial crimes as well as supervising select businesses and professions.
As the deputy director, Leni is tasked with assisting the overall management of FIU, assessing Belize’s international obligations, acting as an advisor to various policy issues as well as providing support to international stakeholders.
Leni enjoys how she has to consistently challenge herself in order to remain on par with all the components of her work which are continuously evolving and looks forward to expanding her knowledge in order to perform to the best of her ability within her field.
